Kobayashi Bookstore, a new book store that has been in operation for over 70 years in Tachibana, Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, will close at the end of this month, May 2024.
At Kobayashi Bookstore, owner Yumiko Kobayashi invited three local bookstore owners to discuss "The Future of Local Bookstores." This talk event was held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, and DIY BOOKS owner Hirata participated as a speaker.

●Speakers
・Yumiko Kobayashi (Kobayashi Bookstore)
・Hidehito Kawata (Bookland Friends)
・Junko Torihei (Irodori Shobo)
・Tai Hirata (DIY BOOKS)
On the day of the event, nearly 40 people participated both offline and online. Thank you to everyone who attended.
We heard about the hardships Ms. Kobayashi faced while running her local bookstore, and the circumstances under which Mr. Kawata and Ms. Torihei started their bookstores.
As I mentioned during the event, I was once again reminded that DIY BOOKS is a bookstore in the sense of making books rather than just selling them. After the event, a participant told me, "That's like the 'Yomiuri' newspaper vendors who sold kawaraban (tile-block prints) in the Edo period," which left a strong impression on me. Perhaps it is (or perhaps not).
However, personally, I believe that writing and reading are inseparable, so although it has become a bookstore that isn't always open, I want to continue my activities gradually. As Yumiko Kobayashi says, "A bookstore can do anything," so I'm going to try everything.
Thank you to Ms. Kobayashi, Mr. Kawata, Ms. Torihei, MC Mr. Wakasa, everyone involved in operating the event, and all our customers.
We created a collection of essays titled "The Local Bookstore"
On April 1st, after hearing the news of Kobayashi Bookstore's closure, I discussed with Kensaku Wakasa, who also helped deliver books for Kobayashi Bookstore, "Is there anything we can do?" As a result, we decided to create a collection of essays.
The collection chronicles events that happened at local bookstores, including Kobayashi Bookstore, and memories related to books.
We reached out not only to people associated with Kobayashi Bookstore but also to customers of DIY BOOKS and people we met through work, and 12 people contributed essays.
From there, we edited and printed it using DIY BOOKS' risograph. While chatting with Mr. Wakasa and Rie Shikita, who contributed essays, we collated, bound, and trimmed it, and it was completed.
For the cover paper, we chose First Vintage because we wanted to create a retro feel with a red color.
The umbrella illustration on the cover is because Kobayashi Bookstore sold not only books but also umbrellas.
Recent initiatives by independent bookstores, including DIY BOOKS, such as "curating books that the owner wants to sell," "selling products other than books," and "attracting customers with events," have been carried out by Kobayashi Bookstore for decades.
Kobayashi Bookstore was a "local bookstore" but also a rather "aggressive bookstore" like today's bookstores. This was not only to survive and keep the store going, but also continued to be a place where people gathered due to the personalities and trustworthiness of the owner, Yumiko Kobayashi, and her husband, Masahiro.
The reason why this zine focused on "local bookstores," including stores other than Kobayashi Bookstore, is because Kobayashi Bookstore seemed like a symbol of local bookstores. And Ms. Kobayashi does not view the closure of the store negatively. Rather, she says that on the last day, she wants to hang red and white curtains and celebrate the new beginning, saying, "You did well!"
I also believe that this will be an encouragement for local bookstores in the future.
People from elementary school students to those in their 70s contributed to the essay collection, and Yumiko Kobayashi also contributed.
It has become a book that tells not only about Kobayashi Bookstore but also about the charm of local bookstores and personal yet universal experiences with books.
Please take a look.
